On the following day, just as the light was beginning to fade, she left her foraging area on Dunsop Fell and made her way back to her roost. She had to pass close to the rocky outcrop of Calf Clough Head to reach it. As she did so, an eagle owl, probably the one she had seen the day before, shot out from a ledge and made to attack her. For a second, Beth caught a glimpse of the owl’s blazing, blood-orange red eyes and her massive, feather-covered taloned feet ready to strike. Then she was fleeing for her life. Ahead of her was Whitendale Farm. She had the speed but the eagle owl held the key element of surprise.

She thrust down hard, quickly building up speed, flying as low as she dared. Then she suddenly shot up in the air and saw the eagle owl overshoot beneath her, carried on relentlessly by its own impetus. It stopped on the ground, glaring up at her. Beth was safe.
